A GREEN future made possible through the use of rare earth metals seems a world away from Zhang Yang'e, whose neighborhood well has become unusable as a result of local rare earth mining operations. An unpleasant odor wafts from a well in Zhang's backyard, with the well's brownish-yellow water standing beneath a tangle of spiderwebs. "The water used to taste sweet and our neighbors all loved it. But now it has been become undrinkable," said the 73-year-old farmer, a resident of Dingnan County in east China's Jiangxi Province. "Even my vegetables withered after I watered them with well water," she said, referring to the rows of green onions, chives and peas she planted in her backyard. Zhang has blamed a rare earth mine located just 10 meters from her home for the poor quality of her well water. The United States is embarking on two weeks of intense diplomacy on Asia as it seeks to rekindle friendly ties with Japan and India while managing an often fractious relationship with China. President Barack Obama's administration has repeatedly said it has no strategy to contain China but it has been shoring up relations with neighboring countries, many of which are nervous about Beijing's rapid growth. China launches two navigation satellites CHINA successfully launched two satellites into space at 4:50am Beijing Time today, the 12th and 13th satellites for its Beidou global navigation and positioning network, the launch center said. The Beidou-2 satellites, launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the southwestern province of Sichuan, was boosted by a Long March-3B carrier rocket and has entered the scheduled orbit. It is the first time China has launched two navigation satellites with one rocket, and the two satellites will help to improve the accuracy of the Beidou, or Compass system, the center said in a statement. China will launch three more satellites for the Beidou network this year and a global satellite positioning and navigation system will be completed in 2020 with more than 30 orbiters, the statement said. An eight-floor building still under construction collapsed Sunday morning in Nanning in south China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, said local fire fighters.
