Expressway linking quake-affected areas opens

Image
A new expressway linking Wenchuan County and Yingxiu Township, the epicenter of a devastating earthquake in 2008 in southwest China's Sichuan Province, opened to traffic on Thursday afternoon. Expressway linking quake-affected areas opens. The 48.27-km Yingwen Expressway, which began to be built in May, 2009, costs nearly 5 billion yuan (802 million U.S. dollars). The expressway is built to improve the transportation capacity in the quake-affected areas. It will play an important role in post-quake restoration and reconstruction, as the "lifeline" Duwen (Dujiangyan-Wenchuan) Expressway was damaged by the 8.0-magnitude earthquake, and has been closed to traffic after several aftershocks in the following years, said the provincial transportation department. The new road will help reduce the travel time by car from Wenchuan to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, to an hour and a half from three hours. (Xinhua contributed to this story) Read More @ Source ...

Elton John exposes himself as an agent of imperialism

Image
Editor's note: If Elton John was so concerned about censorship, and political dissidents, then why has Elton never spoken up for the American political dissidents locked down, like Mumia Abu Jamal, and Leonard Peltier? Real political dissidents that oppose real fascism. Maybe because Elton is a fascist himself? Along with Ai. Entertainment ought to be entertainment, not a way to sneak in pro-imperialist messages, or promote destabilisation of independent countries. By doing what he did, Elton showed the world his deceptive methods, and pro-imperialist ideologies. It has really come to the point where I no longer have any respect for any western performers because of the dirty track record they have for promoting instability in foreign countries, while ignoring the crimes of their own governments. Take Bjork for example, a classic imperialist. She does a concert in China, and like Elton, makes a political statement at the end, calling for Tibet to split from China. Now I raise t...

A judge with the Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court contacted Li Zhuang to hear his opinions on his case. A judge with the Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court contacted Li Zhuang to hear his opinions on his case. Li presented documents to the court and the judge pledged a fair trial, court officials told Xinhua. Li told reporters that he considers the contact "a start in the process" to address his complaint. "The judge carefully listened to my opinions during the more than one-hour talk," he said. This developed as Li, 51, lodged a complaint with the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) in Beijing last week over his jailing two years ago. An official statement released last Saturday offered no details about the complaint, but said the SPP will handle Li...

Death for Chinese man who kept ‘sex slaves’

Image
A man in central China was sentenced to death on Friday for keeping six women in a dungeon as sex slaves and his role in the killing of two of them. Li Hao, 35, was convicted on charges of murder, rape, organized prostitution, illegal detention and spreading pornography for profit by the Luoyang Intermediate People's Court in Henan Province. The court said Li dug the dungeon himself under the basement he bought in Luoyang in August 2009 just to lock up women he tricked into coming to his place. The women had been held there for two to 21 months, according to police investigations. The court said Li repeatedly raped the women, forced them to appear in obscene web shows from March to April 2011 and forced them to have sex with customers for a few days from late August to early September last year. Li's secret dungeon was discovered after one of the women fled from the forced prostitution and reported the situation to police. In a twist in the case, three of the wome...

More HIV infections attributable to sex between men

Image
Sex between men is on the rise as a major cause of new HIV/AIDS infections in China, according to new research by the Ministry of Health (MOH). [Photo/asianewsphoto] In the first 10 months of 2012, 21.1 percent of all new HIV infections recorded in China came from male homosexual sex. This represented a sharp rise compared with 15 percent attributable to the cause in the same period last year, said a report released by the ministry on Thursday. The report also showed that the number of new infections among young people between 15 and 24 as well as people above 50 years of age are rising year by year. In the first 10 months, the numbers in the two age groups were 9,514 and 16,131, a year-on-year increase of 12.8 percent and 20.2 percent respectively. However, the report said the ratio of mother-to-infant HIV transmission among all HIV infections had dro...

Image
30 November 2012 Last updated at 03:00 ET Mr Pitsuwan said Beijing's plan was a "serious turn of events" The head of Asean has said China's plan to board ships in disputed areas of the South China Sea could escalate tensions. Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan told Reuters news agency that Beijing's plan was "a very serious turn of events". On Thursday China said that it granted its border patrol police the power to board and search ships in the area. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also claim parts of the region. State media said patrols in the southern island province of Hainan would be able to board foreign ships that stopped in its waters or violated other regulations.
