Foreign countries warned not to interfere in disputes A MILITARY spokesman yesterday warned foreign countries to avoid interfering with territorial disputes between China and its neighbors regarding the South China Sea. On the eve of the 85th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army, the Chinese government held a press conference by inviting senior officers with the PLA to meet the press. "We oppose any country outside the region intervening in these disputes," Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said on the sidelines of the conference. "Any intervention by countries outside the region will complicate the problem and even deteriorate the situation," Geng said, calling for bilateral dialogue and negotiations to solve disputes in both the South China Sea and the East China Sea. Olympic badminton players charged

31 July 2012 Last updated at 21:56 ET The Badminton World Federation has charged eight female badminton Olympic players with "not using one's best efforts to win a match". Four pairs of players - two from South Korea, one from China and one from Indonesia - could be disciplined. China's Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli and South Koreans Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na were accused after their match was booed by spectators. 2 dead, 26 missing in Xinjiang mudslide

URUMQI – Two people died and 26 others have been reported missing after a mudslide hit Northwest China'sXinjiang Uygur autonomous region Tuesday morning, the local government said. The mudslide occurred at an iron ore mine in the township of Araltobe, Xinyuan county, Kazakautonomous prefecture of Ili, said a spokesman with the prefecture's fire brigade, adding thatthe brigade received an emergency call at around 1 am. Rescue workers search for victims after a mudslide hit Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomousregion Tuesday morning. [Photo/Xinhua] The mud and debris buried 28 people, initially identified as 22 mine workers and six localresidents, said the spokesman. The bodies of two victims have been recovered from the debris, which covers an area about500 meters long, 60 meters wide and five to six meters deep, he said. China will not engage in arms race: army officers

Chinese army officers on Tuesday said China's military development does not pose a threat to any nation and it will not engage in an arms race, as the country seeks to develop its armaments based on its national strength and state security needs. China captured three gold medals on the third full day of competition – in artistic gymnastics, diving and women's weightlifting – to bring its total to nine. The United States is in second place with five gold, but its haul of medals is level with China at 17. Philippines to auction sea blocks

31 July 2012 Last updated at 00:49 ET The Philippines has been building up its defence capabilities in the South China Sea The Philippine government is set to auction off three areas in the South China Sea for oil and gas exploration that are also claimed by China. Several local and foreign companies are qualified to bid, including French energy giant Total, US-based Exxon and Royal Dutch Shell. The Philippines is eager to reduce its dependence on imported energy. However the waters, which are claimed by several other countries, are a source of tension in the region. The blocks being auctioned are off Palawan province, near Malampaya and Sampaguita where natural gas was discovered. That area, near Reed Bank, is also claimed by China. Mission of a Chinese mother

Ms Mai, 94, was born in Dongfeng town of Zhongshan city, Guangdong province. She has a hard life. She experienced the Anti-Japanese Invasion War (1937-1945) when she was young. Her husband and eldest daughter died at her middle age. She has taken care of two mentally handicapped sons for more than 70 years, who have not even called her mom once. Ms Mai says she is a mother most of her life and she hopes "I can be a good mom". Ms Mai's shabby house locates beside a brook in the north of her village. She is old but healthy. Her sharp eyes and ears ensure that she can do most housework at her 94. She not only needs care for herself, but also her two mentally disabled sons. Her eldest son is A Fu, 71, little son, A Man, 68. These two old men look much younger than their ages. Their only expression to the others is a big smile, childlike smile. 31 July 2012 Last updated at 06:03 ET The British Olympic Association's chairman has said teenage Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen is not a drug cheat, after a US coach cast doubt on her world record-breaking swim. Lord Colin Moynihan said Ye, 16, had passed drug tests, was "clean" and deserved recognition for her talent. Ye smashed her personal best by at least five seconds in the 400m Medley. Questions of Beijing flood not answered yet

The most popular topic for Beijingers now is not London Olympics, but the flood caused by a heavy rain on July 21. As more stories are discovered and circulated, some important questions are waiting for answers. First, Beijing residents are seriously lack of basic knowledge or training on how to save themselves in floods. One 34-year-old male driver was drowned to death in his Hyundai Tucson on his way home that evening after trying for at least 20 mins to break the window from within the car. CCTV, China's national TV network, broadcasted the rescue work. So his death catches national attention. Although many people point fingers at slow reactions of official rescuers and the less developed drainage system of Beijing, the driver should be responsible for his own death first.
