Letters: China is not what they thought it was, Chinese are interested in their own agenda

After seeing your article about Chinese people getting foreign citizenship, I got to thinking. I remember seeing an interview about Jet Li as a child, and he was interviewed by Richard Nixon, and Nixon asked Li, how'd you like to come work for me as a bodyguard.

Li replied, "I don't want to protect any individual. When I grow up, I want to defend my one billion Chinese countrymen!".

I was very inspired when I first heard this. I thought to myself, the communists really succeeded in educating people to be selfless.

Then recently, I heard that Jet had become a Singapore citizen. I asked myself, what happened to protecting your one billion compatriots? I still think that Li is a patriotic guy, but I have to ask myself, what happened to China in these 30 years to make China change so much on a bigger scale.

I don't think that the Chinese are as selfless as they used to be. I have talked to other foreigners who have come to China, and even they said that China is not what they thought it was.

I talked to a man from Sri Lanka who came to China, and even he said that China is not what he expected. He had studied Mao's works, read the Beijing Review, and spent many years associating with the Chinese embassy. His original impression must have been that China was a country of selfless people like Jet Li.

To many, China is a champion of the third world, and continues to be. Last year, the Sri Lankan paid his first visit to China. His impression was that the people in China are interested in their own agenda. He saw nothing of this selflessness that he read about in the Chinese press. The Chinese people he met were completely different from the ones he had known at the Chinese embassy. Although he still admires, and respects China, he was a bit disappointed at the loss of Chinese greatness.

Is this trend reversible, or are we stuck with a morally declining China? Many of you may not be familiar with the Chinese identity, but it's a deep one. For thousands of years, China stood at the top of human civilization, proud, and rich.

Til this day, this identity still resonates with many Chinese across the world. In fact, many of the Chinese who go overseas, both past and present, go there to work, and earn money, but keep in mind that they will eventually return to China to retire. This was the case with Chinese who built the American railroads, and still, this is the case for Chinese people who go overseas to work in restaurants.

For those of you who don't understand Chinese culture, it is highly frowned upon for Chinese to take up another citizenship. One major reason Chinese do not like to settle in foreign countries is because Chinese people have a responsibility to their ancestors to take care of their grave. Many Chinese have children just so someone will take care of their grave. If you abandon your ancestors, this is seen as a cardinal sin. For these reasons, immigrating overseas is frowned upon
