1. 小s老公涉迷奸 Xiǎo S lǎogōng shèmíjiān ("Xiao S's Hubby Date Rape Drug Gate")- The saga of Li Zongrui, scion of one of Taiwan's wealthiest families, continues. The scandal began in late July, when two women accused Li of sexual assault. Over the following weeks, images and video segments of Li engaging in sexual activity with tens of different women — some of whom were apparently unconscious — surfaced online. After learning from one of his former mistresses that the police had issued an arrest warrant, Li allegedly fled Taiwan. Taiwan newspapers are reporting that Li's father, Li Yuechang, former CEO of Yuanta Financial Holdings, is urging his son to turn himself in. Story in Chinese here.
2. 杜海涛回应分手 Shè Hǎitāo huíyīng fēnshǒu ("She Haiao responds on breakup") – She Haitao, the host of long-running Chinese variety show Kuaile Dabenying, wants netizens to stop talking about his breakup with ex-girlfriend Li Ruoxi. After She, appearing on the show earlier this week, revealed that he is no longer with his former girlfriend, netizens responded with disapproving posts on Sina Weibo and other social media platforms. 3. 哈尔滨阳明滩大桥 Háěrbīn Yángmíngtān dàqiáo (Harbin Yangmingtan Bridge collapse): Only nine months after its completion late in 2011, a bridge in the northeastern city of Harbin collapsed at 5:30 a.m. Friday, killing three people and injuring five others. The six-lane overpass, which cost over $ 300 million USD to build, had a declared capacity of 9,800 vehicles per hour. Read more about the tragedy in English here.
4. 海南嬉水节 Hǎinán xīshuǐjié – (Water-splashing Festival in Hainan): Hainan authorities have confirmed that they have detained a suspect in a sexual assault case that surfaced at yesterday's Qixi festival. At Qixi, a holiday celebrated by China's Miao and Li ethnic groups, participants splash water as they pray for good fortune in the coming year. Not long after this year's festivities began, attendees began posting photos of female participants being wrestled to the ground by a group of young men. Read more about it here in Chinese.
5. 撒贝宁遭警告 Sā Bèiníng yù jǐnggào – ("Sa Beining Gets Warnings"): CCTV anchor Sa Beining's budding romance with prominent actress Zhang Ziyi has its detractors. While some netizens can't wait for the two heartthrobs to tie the knot, others resent Zhang's previous engagement with a foreign financier. 6. 流氓猪石雕 liúmáng zhū shídiāo ("Hooligan Pig Statue"): A tacky outdoor statue in Henan province is raising eyebrows across China. The statue, which is of two cartoonish pigs — one seemingly giving a Shiatsu-style massage to the other — began to gain notoriety after photos of it surfaced online last week. While the city official responsible for the statue's erection claimed that the image is "clearly of a child rubbing the back of his mother", netizens aren't so sure. Read more in Chinese here.
7. 26个省会城市平… 26 gè shěnghuī chéngshī píng … ("Comparison of 26 provincial seats"): According to recent figures released by the Department of Statistics, Guangzhou leads China's 22 provincial capitals and four "self-administered municipalities" with a mean per-capita income of 57,473 RMB. Beijing and Nanjing were China's second and third-ranked cities, with per-capita incomes of 56,061 RMB and 54,713 RMB respectively. Read more in Chinese here.
8. 佳木斯火车追尾 - Jiāmùsī huǒchē zhuīwěi (Jiamusi train rear-ended): A train collision that took place this morning in northeast China's Heilongjiang province injured 24 people. According to Xinhua, passengers were disembarking from a train in Jiamusi city when another train, failing to stop, struck from the rear. Read more about this here in Chinese.
9. 大连高新园区。。。Dàlián Gāoxīnyuán qū (Dalian Gaoxinyuan District): A major fire broke out in a Dalian apartment building Thursday afternoon. Authorities have yet to announce whether any residents were injured in the accident. Read more here in Chinese.
10. 孙大圣故里 Sùn dàshèng gùlǐ (The Monkey King Sun Wukong's Hometown"): Officials in Shanxi's Loufan City have declared the municipality the "hometown" of one of China's most iconic literary figures — Sun Wukong, the mythical monkey king of "Journey to the West". But for the town's administrators, the claim is more than a literary one; rather, the city has invested over 6 million RMB in Sun Wukong-themed tourist attractions. Despite the officials' fervor, things don't seem to be off to a great start, and netizens have been keen to lampoon the city's expropriation of a literary icon. Read more about this in Chinese.
