  • Fire forces Emirate Airlines jet to land in Urumqi

    AN Emirate Airlines flight from Dubai to Beijing made an emergency landing at Urumqi Airport in the capital of China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Monday after its luggage compartment caught fire.

    No one was hurt in the accident and the fire was extinguished soon after the plane landed at 9:08pm, the Beijing Times reported today.

    A fire alarm sounded when Flight EK308 was flying over Xinjiang. Passengers were told that their plane had to make an emergency landing at Urumqi Airport due to a problem with the luggage compartment. Nothing abnormal was observed in the passenger compartment.

    Some luggage was burnt or charred. An airport worker who took part in the firefight said the fire might be caused by the spontaneous combustion of a battery. But the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

    The Emirate Airlines has arranged another flight to send passengers to Beijing.


  • Bus driver gets jail term for fatal crash

    A driver was sentenced to seven years in jail yesterday, half a year after the school bus he was driving crashed into a ditch, leaving 15 students dead and eight others injured.
    The crash happened in Fengxian country in east China's Jiangsu province on December 12.
    Fengxian court found Hong Xu, 31, guilty of causing the crash.
    The bus carrying 41 students careened into a roadside ditch after Hong tried to avoid a pedicab.

  • Training to counter terrorists

    Officers inspect weapons in Jinan in east China's Shandong Province yesterday as Chinese and Indonesian special forces conduct air-landing and shooting exercises during joint counter-terrorism training.The training, which began on Sunday and will run to July 16, will focus on subjects such as precision shooting, parachuting, air-landing and counter-terrorism search and assault tactics, a senior Chinese officer familiar with the exercises said.
