Old Beijing Street Hawking

Hawking, or "Jiao Mai", was a lively component of daily life for Beijingers in the early 20th century, with cries ringing out from the city's hawkers. According to many peddlers, the better they cry, the better they sell.

The practice, once considered a skill, has diminished and is now a relic of the past. For many of Beijing's older residents, the shouts from hawkers takes them back in time.
