A recent report shows that Guangzhou residents working salaried jobs work an average of 9.02 hours a day, higher than the legal ceiling of eight hours and the highest among the 28 cities covered by the survey.
The survey is carried out by a social investigation research center, Peking University, under the entrustment of a personnel recruitment website.
In the survey, Shanghai and Beijing rank third and seventh place, respectively, with working hours of 8.89 and 8.68 hours.
The report points out that in the recent three months, nearly 70% of salaried employees would continue working, for an average of 0.28 hours, after returning home. Their average sleep time is less than eight hours, with Guangzhou salaried persons sleeping 7.18 hours a day.
Lin Jiang, professor at Sun Yat-sen University, attributes the long working hours to two reasons.
First, Guangzhou boasts a highly developed economy, with higher competition and a strained workforce. In order to lower costs, profit-seeking enterprises choose to have their employers work overtime, rather than hire new staff, which would increase costs for social insurance and public providential funds.
Secondly, employees work overtime to make up for the lack of job security in a highly competitive environment. Working overtime can prove their enthusiasm and diligence towards works, thereby winning the acknowledgement and approval of their superiors.
