Taiwan opens first mainland trade promotion center

SHANGHAI – Taiwan's leading trade promotion agency opened its first office in the Chinesemainland in Shanghai on Tuesday.

The Taipei World Trade Center, which opened the Taiwan Trade Center ShanghaiRepresentative Office, is expected to open another office in Beijing by the end of this year, saidits president Wang Chih-Kang.

The Taipei World Trade Center also plans to open representative offices in Qingdao, Dalian,Guangzhou and Chengdu in 2013, Wang added.

The Shanghai office will serve Shanghai, Zhejiang province and Kunshan city in Jiangsuprovince, home to many Taiwanese businessmen.

The office will not only serve Taiwanese businessmen but also mainland companies.

It will help Taiwanese businessmen better tap the Chinese mainland market, invite mainland businessmen to visit and invest in Taiwan, and boost collaboration between the service industries on both sides, said Chiu Hui-li, the top representative of the Shanghai office.

Fire forces Emirate Airlines jet to land in Urumqi AN Emirate Airlines flight from Dubai to Beijing made an emergency landing at Urumqi Airport in the capital of China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Monday after its luggage compartment caught fire. No one was hurt in the accident and the fire was extinguished soon after the plane landed at 9:08pm, the Beijing Times reported today. A fire alarm sounded when Flight EK308 was flying over Xinjiang. Passengers were told that their plane had to make an emergency landing at Urumqi Airport due to a problem with the luggage compartment. Nothing abnormal was observed in the passenger compartment. Some luggage was burnt or charred. An airport worker who took part in the firefight said the fire might be caused by the spontaneous combustion of a battery.
