A Chinese netizen posted on his microblog that one of his colleagues received six counterfeit notes when he withdrew 1,000 yuan (US$ 159) cash from the China Merchants Bank ATM at the Jiangan center in Beijing on Feb. 22, according to 21st Century Net.
The victim went to China Merchant Banks to complain the next day. The bank asked to see the counterfeit money, which the man produced. The bank said since the man had waited a day to complain, they had no way to verify the cash was from their ATM. The man said he hadn't noticed the cash was fake until he got home because he was in a rush.
The netizen posted a screenshot of China Merchants Bank's response to his friend. The bank said that all cash in the bank's ATMs are screened by a machine and then again by bankers, to ensure the cash is genuine.
The post has incited discussion among netizens, with many saying they had also come across fake money at some point, including at major banks.
