China in 'serial killer' inquiry

A man has been detained in south-west China by police investigating the disappearance of as many as 17 young boys and teenagers in recent years.

The 56-year-old man was detained earlier this month in Yunnan province on suspicion of killing a teenager, Xinhua news agency reported.

But police widened their investigation following reports of other missing teenagers in the area.

Beijing says it has sent a team of experts to investigate.

What started as a routine murder inquiry now appears could be the case of a serial killer, reports the BBC's Martin Patience in Beijing.

The case came to light after a 19-year-old man disappeared in late April in Yunnan province's Jincheng county.

Xinhua said police discovered some of the teenager's personal belongings while searching the suspect's home.

Reports then emerged of others teenagers who had gone missing in the same area.

Villagers had thought the teenagers had been kidnapped to work in illegal brick kilns, the reports said.

There are reports that some of the other victims may have been dismembered. Local media quoted residents as saying they had seen plastic bags at the suspect's home that appeared to contain bones.

Two senior police officials have also reportedly been removed from their positions for their handling of the case.

An American professional wingsuit flier on Saturday successfully performed a jump and dive through the Tianmen Hole - an actual hole through a mountain - in Hunan province, central China. The 35 year old American Jeb Corliss jumped from a helicopter 6000 feet (1830 metres) above the Tianmen cave, flying towards it, and went right through it. The professional wingsuit flier failed at his first attempt, but succeeded the second time round. "That was one of the greatest wingsuit flights of my entire life. Thank you China, that was amazing," he said after he landed safely. According to Corliss, the first attempt failed due to smoke brackets on his feet that did not work properly and forced him to take a detour. He has become the first wingsuit stuntman to fly in China. From waste leather to drug capsules: Toxic gelatin factory exposed in Hebei

The latest item on the toxic food list in China is drug capsules made of industrial gelatin extracted from bleached waste leathers. Such capsules can cause cancer due to high level of chromium resulting from leather tanning processing. China raises rare earth exports

18 May 2012 Last updated at 00:00 ET China said 10,680 tonnes would be added to the quota on top of 10,546 tonnes initially issued China has allowed more companies to export rare earths, increasing the quotas set by the government, after they met environment standards. It has increased rare earth export quotas by 10,680 tonnes, the Ministry of Commerce said Thursday. The announcement brings the total quotas issued so far this year to 21,226 tonnes. Rare earths are a collection of 17 elements used in products from smartphones to hybrid cars. China, the biggest miner of rare earths, capped exports at 30,184 tonnes last year. It said the quotas were designed to conserve resources and protect the environment. Beijing is embroiled in trade disputes with the US, Japan and the European Union over its control of rare earths.
