Ceremony held to present gov't award of students abroad

A ceremony was held Friday evening to present the 9th Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad at the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in New York.

The Award, established in 2003, is a scholarship to honor overseas Chinese students with outstanding academic accomplishments. Only students who are under 40 years old, hold Chinese passports and attend doctoral programs for more than a year are eligible.

This year, a total of 495 Chinese PhD candidates from 25 nations were awarded, including 9 Extraordinary Potential Prize winners. 31 of them, including 3 Extraordinary Potential Prize winners, were from the ten northeastern states of the United States, where many top universities are located. Awardees get a cash prize of 6,000 US dollars, and Extraordinary Potential Prize winners get 10,000 US dollars.

Ambassador Sun Guoxiang attended the ceremony and delivered a speech, saying that the celebration is for personal success as well as the amazing development of the educational cooperation between China and the United States.

Dr. Christopher Murray from the University of Pennsylvania also made a speech on behalf of professors because two students of his, Ye Xingchen and Chen Jun, won the Award for two consecutive years. Dr. Murray said humbly that he was very lucky to work with those talented and hardworking Chinese students.

This is the first time the authorities have openly targeted illegal aliens in the capital. According to the entry-exit bureau -- the equivalent of the US Border Protection - 13000 cases of illegal entry, overstaying and illegal employment of foreigners were reported since 2008.

From waste leather to drug capsules: Toxic gelatin factory exposed in Hebei

The latest item on the toxic food list in China is drug capsules made of industrial gelatin extracted from bleached waste leathers. Such capsules can cause cancer due to high level of chromium resulting from leather tanning processing. As of now, China has banned the sale of 13 drugs and arrested 22 for allegedly making and selling capsules made from discarded leather. China raises rare earth exports

18 May 2012 Last updated at 00:00 ET China said 10,680 tonnes would be added to the quota on top of 10,546 tonnes initially issued China has allowed more companies to export rare earths, increasing the quotas set by the government, after they met environment standards. It has increased rare earth export quotas by 10,680 tonnes, the Ministry of Commerce said Thursday. The announcement brings the total quotas issued so far this year to 21,226 tonnes. Rare earths are a collection of 17 elements used in products from smartphones to hybrid cars. China, the biggest miner of rare earths, capped exports at 30,184 tonnes last year. It said the quotas were designed to conserve resources and protect the environment. Beijing is embroiled in trade disputes with the US, Japan and the European Union over its control of rare earths.
