A six-month-old baby saved 23 people in southern Taiwan by crying nonstop on the night of April 22 when the apartment building he was sleeping in caught fire.

After being awoken by the baby, Kory, his grandmother got out of the bed to find that their apartment building was in flames. She quickly dialed for emergency help, and 23 residents escaped from the burning building safely.

Kory cannot speak, but his loud voice saved the lives of the residents of the whole building, located in the Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung. Kory was in Taiwan with his mother on a trip from Canada, where they live, to visit his grandmother, Deng Tai-ping. They planned to stay for 20 days to accompany Deng, a cancer patient.

But on their first night back home, their apartment building caught fire.

Deng said that she heard the baby crying at about 4am on April 22. When she walked to the living room, she heard the sound of snapping and smelled smoke. She walked outside to find that stairwell of the building was on fire.

Deng shouted to alarm the family members and dialed for emergency help. On her way out, she also woke neighbors living upstairs.

The fire was handled by firefighters within 20 minutes, and 23 of the building's residents were saved. One of the residents said that Kory may have a sensitive nose, leading him to smell the smoke. They all thanked Kory for saving their lives.
