Baidu Joins Hands with Kingsoft Powerword, Close Cooperation to Lead Online Dictionary and Translation Services
Baidu and Kingsoft Powerword, China's professional online dictionary and translation software, announced today that they're joining hands to deliver free high quality translation services to online users. Kingsoft Powerword's many years of accumulated resources as available on its website, PC client as well as mobile client will now be integrated into Baidu's own self-developed world-class machine translation technology.
Two years ago, internationally renowned machine translation experts Dr. Wang Haifeng and Dr. Wu Hua founded Baidu's core machine translation research and development team. Thanks to Baidu's massive computing platform and abundant Internet data processing experience, the team was able to develop and master its own multi-language mining and machine translation core technology in very little time. In just one year, the team came out with its own Baidu Translator product, providing Chinese, English and Japanese vocabulary, sentence and webpage translation services to the online masses for free, and receiving significant recognition from industry leaders as well as online users for its accuracy. Daily usage rates have shot up to the millions within a year of its release.
Kingsoft Powerword is known for its meticulous treatment of content. Aside from providing comprehensive and succinct translation services, Kingsoft also insists on purchasing fully licensed and authoritative dictionary contents to provide the most professional and detailed information to users in need. Two months ago, Kingsoft Powerword announced its purchase of the Collins Cobuild Advanced English Chinese Dictionary. This dictionary includes a selection of 4.3 billion vocabulary words, 310,000 phrases, 110,000 sample analyses, tens of thousands of sentence collocations, word analyses and a large quantity of sentences designed for netizens to use in real life scenarios. Kingsoft Powerword now provides all of these at no cost to the Chinese online masses. Kingsoft Powerword offers web, mobile and PC clients, and the latest version also included a voice recognition function for added convenience.
Baidu's Chief Scientist of Foundational Technology Dr. Wang Haifeng said, "By depending on Baidu's solid accumulation of Internet technology and resources, Baidu Translator can capture the trends of online speech without delay, accurately decipher meaning, and provide translation services that are well in tune with the language habits of online users. Our cooperating partner Kingsoft Powerword is held with high regard amongst the masses, and enjoys a very expansive and diverse user base. Through this cooperation, we anticipate that our products, technology and resources will complement each other, and enable us to take translation services to the next level and bridge the divide created by language barriers.
CEO of Kingsoft Powerword Wang Xin said, "Owing to Baidu's natural advantages in search, its translation engine can quickly capture the trends of online language, and provide translations that are most tailored to the language habits of Chinese netizens. After a thorough evaluation, we see that Baidu's machine translation technology definitely ranks with the best in the world. Baidu has accumulated rich experience in online operations. I believe that this cooperation will complement each other's advantages, and give rise to online dictionary and translation services that are even more suitable for Chinese users."
This cooperation with Kingsoft Powerword signifies Baidu Translator's first opening of its API. The Baidu Translator API will soon be made available on the Baidu Open Platform (open.baidu.com), so that user experience will continue to improve through Baidu's further cooperation with other partners. Kingsoft Powerword also plans to gradually open up its online dictionary API in order to provide more users with professional, accurate and authoritative dictionary content.
The market potential for online dictionary and translation services is enomous. In light of this, both Baidu and Kingsoft Powerword believe that there is still plenty of room for further cooperation in the future. This recent joining of hands of the two parties is a great stride for both towards strengthening each other's leading position in the online dictionary and translation domain.
