Last week Apple released a list of countries where the next round of new iPads will be sold, and China has again been omitted. The omission has left many Apple fans in China disappointed, providing an opportunity for scam artists and phishing sites to try to fill the hole left by the legitimate products, according to Wall Street Journal.

According to a report from the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Centre, a government-sponsored NGO, the slow release of the new iPad to China has led to a rise in phishing attacks, with victims lured in with the promise of a cheap new iPad or iPhone 4S.

The report says these websites usually promise customers payment on delivery, and buyers receive a phone call from the fraudsters after agreeing to the deal. In the conversation, the phisher gleans information about how the customer will best be fooled, then deciding which scam strategy should be applied.

If the customer knows little about Apple products and online shopping, then the scam artist will provide a fake mobile phone number and the customer will pay when receiving something other than real Apple products. Since the number is not in service, then the customer can ask no compensation. But the most frequent cases are customers who are deceived in the conversation and agree to pay in advance. They never receive the products they purchase.

The report also reveals that these phishing websites have had more than 200,000 visits everyday since Apple's announcement. It is unknown how many victims have been scammed.
