More tainted capsules, companies found

In the latest nationwide inspections of medicine capsules, 74 batches made by 15 pharmaceutical companies were found to contain excessive chromium, the State Food and Drug Administration said yesterday.

  

The administration said it conducted checks on 117 producers and 941 batches of capsules. The toxic capsules will be recalled and destroyed, officials said. They said nine of the 15 companies were in Zhejiang Province, the main production area, while the others were in Chongqing and the provinces of Henan and Sichuan.

Producers' licenses will be suspended and people directly responsible will be "removed out of the medicine-production industry," officials said.

The scandal came to light when China Central Television reported that several companies were using industrial gelatin to make drug capsules. The gelatin contained chromium, which can cause kidney and liver damage and lead to cancer.

"Daily management and supervision is severely lax in these companies," SFDA officials said. They have ordered all capsule manufactures to list their raw materials on the local SFDA website so the public can be made aware of the ingredients.

The SFDA issued an emergency notice calling for a halt to the sale and consumption of a list of drugs that may have been packed into tainted capsules. Many people started avoiding all drug capsules after the scandal was exposed.

Along with the checks, authorities have begun investigations into possible dereliction of duty among law-enforcement and safety supervisors.

On March 12th, the human rights organization Reporters Without Borders published it's annual report, this showed that China and Iran have significantly strengthened their monitoring of the Internet since last year, and that they now belonged to the countries considered "Internet Enemies". In addition, another 10 countries, including North Korea, Cuba, Vietnam and Belarus have been included in the list. The report accuses these countries of filtering Internet content restricting Internet freedom, and of conducting official propaganda and persecuting "cyber-dissidents". In addition, in the draft amendment of the new Criminal Procedure Law, "secret arrests" have become legal. This has become one of the focuses public concerns during the CCP's "two sessions" conference this year. At present, rural folk in mainland China have launched mass movements, trying to stop this "draconian law" from being passed in Congress. In addition to persons in the legal profession, investor Xue Manzi launched a vote on "whether or not the draft amendment of the Criminal Procedure Law should be voted on now" in Sina micro blogging on the afternoon of March 11th. From waste leather to drug capsules: Toxic gelatin factory exposed in Hebei

The latest item on the toxic food list in China is drug capsules made of industrial gelatin extracted from bleached waste leathers. Such capsules can cause cancer due to high level of chromium resulting from leather tanning processing. As of now, China has banned the sale of 13 drugs and arrested 22 for allegedly making and selling capsules made from discarded leather. China raises rare earth exports

It has increased rare earth export quotas by 10,680 tonnes, the Ministry of Commerce said Thursday. The announcement brings the total quotas issued so far this year to 21,226 tonnes. Rare earths are a collection of 17 elements used in products from smartphones to hybrid cars. China, the biggest miner of rare earths, capped exports at 30,184 tonnes last year. It said the quotas were designed to conserve resources and protect the environment. Beijing is embroiled in trade disputes with the US, Japan and the European Union over its control of rare earths.
