Chinese premier Wen Jiabao visited Iceland on April 20-21, marking the first premier-level trip between the two countries established diplomatic relations 41 years ago.
Last week when Li Changchun, a senior Chinese Communist Party official, visited the UK, he was asked about the case involving Bo Xilai, the ousted former party chief of Chongqing who has been at the center of a monumental political scandal. When Wen finished his meeting with Olafur Grimsson, Iceland's president, he was also asked about the incident by a Bloomberg reporter. The reporter was denied access to Wen by the premier's bodyguards.
Grimsson said after meeting with Wen that he did not talk about Bo's case with during their conversation.
"I didn't discuss the matter of Bo Xilai in particular with him as I didn't want to discuss specific individuals," Grimsson said in an interview outside his residence at Bessastadir, according to Bloomberg. "We did have in-depth discussions about human rights and the possibility of cooperation between China and Iceland in that field, where China could utilize Iceland's experience and knowledge in the field of human rights."
China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported on April 10 that Bo was dismissed from top Communist Party positions on suspicion of "serious discipline violations." Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, remains in custody on suspicion of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood.
Compared to Wen's low-profile response to the Bo case, a Downing Street spokesman said that Li thanked UK prime minister David Cameron for his willingness to assist in investigating Heywood's death. Li also said the case is being examined by the judiciary in "full accordance with the rule of law."
